In these works, artist Nieves González critically interrogates the inherited pictorial tradition, establishing a productive tension between what was and what could be. Solstice and Equinox, two portraits that embody this duality through image and name itself, function as thresholds where classical canons undergo deliberate metamorphosis. These astronomical moments, extreme light and perfect balance, become visual metaphors for the encounter between the sacred and profane: the solstices mark the culmination of opposing forces, while the equinoxes emerge as moments of temporal suspension where past and future coexist, allowing profound transformations of being. In this liminal space, the artist captures the transition of life through time, transforming the familiar into something unsettling and new that questions our relationship with history.
